The
‘‘first lady’’
of Mykonos
Manto Mavrogenous was the
legendary heroine of Mykonos,
who committed her whole
life to the Greek Revolution.

Two centuries ago, Manto Mavrogenous abandoned the lounges of
aristocracy and committed herself body and soul to the holy cause of the
Greek Revolution. She fought, fell in love, and was betrayed. The ‘‘first lady’’
of Mykonos lived her life like in a novel. And she became worthy of the island
she loved so much. High spirited and emancipated from a young age, she
decided she could not remain indifferent and announced to her family that
she would get actively involved in the War of Independence. She left Tinos
and went to her beloved Mykonos in order to organize her compatriots
against the conqueror. Manto’s private fortune was offered to meet the needs
of the nation and she convinced many more islanders to follow her own
example. She died with dignity in Paros, not attracting any attention, acting
exactly as she did for the Revolution – possessing a great deal of modesty and
integrity. She carried Mykonos on her shoulders with pride and placed it on
the map of the Revolution, so that today the island’s inhabitants can pride
themselves on the fact that Mykonos’ people earned their freedom, it was
not offered to them. Δύο αιώνες πριν, η Μαντώ Μαυρογένους εγκατέλειψε
ιερό σκοπό της απελευθέρωσης. Πολέμησε, ερωτεύτηκε, προδόθηκε. Η
ζωή της «πρώτης κυρίας» της Μυκόνου θυμίζει μυθιστόρημα. Δραστήρια
και απελευθερωμένη από μικρή ηλικία,
αποφάσισε ότι δεν μπορούσε να
παραμείνει αμέτοχη και ανακοίνωσε στην
οικογένειά της ότι θα πάρει μέρος στην
Ελληνική Επανάσταση. Γύρισε από την
Τήνο στην αγαπημένη της Μύκονο, με
σκοπό να οργανωθεί με τους συναγωνιστές
της ενάντια στον κατακτητή. Η προσωπική
της περιουσία προσφέρθηκε στις ανάγκες
του έθνους και η ίδια έπεισε πολλούς
νησιώτες να ακολουθήσουν το δικό της
παράδειγμα. Απεβίωσε αξιοπρεπώς
στην Πάρο, μακριά από τα φώτα της
δημοσιότητας, όπως ακριβώς δρούσε και
στην Επανάσταση, με μετριοφροσύνη και
εντιμότητα. Κουβάλησε τη Μύκονο στις
πλάτες της και την έβαλε στο χάρτη της
Επανάστασης. Χάρη σ’ αυτήν, οι κάτοικοι
του νησιού μπορούν να υπερηφανεύονται
ότι η Μύκονος κέρδισε την ελευθερία της,
δεν της προσφέρθηκε.
